The problems built-in bookshelves solve
Collections of records, art books or objects need particular depths and heights. Standard bookcases rarely suit them, and that’s where bespoke shelving helps.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Bookcases that lean or wobble
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Shelves packed two rows deep
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of the Holy Innocents, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Before you choose who makes it
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Built-in bookshelves in West Hendon
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. Typical reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and shelves packed two rows deep; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Open-plan living is usual in homes built since 2000, and around West Hendon many homes date from those years. In a room like that, built-in bookshelves can help separate the sitting area from the kitchen, without putting up a wall. Finished floors in newer homes mark easily, so they’re covered while we work.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The width and height of the space
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How square the room is
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
What we need to know
To help us picture the room, please include:
- How you want to use the space
- Your postcode and the borough
- Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Examples of the look you are after

Questions from West Hendon
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live in a flat in West Hendon. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
What happens during the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. Fixings are chosen for the wall type. Where a wall cannot take the load, we will say so and suggest another approach.
Can you build bookshelves over a radiator?
It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.
Living-room carpentry in West Hendon: local notes
In the neighbourhood around West Hendon, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and the years since 2000 (about 35%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Hendon, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in West Hendon is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live in a period home close to St Matthias the Apostle church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. For a family home near The Hyde School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Fitting day, step by step
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so it’s useful to let us know at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us with a few details about the wall and your books. A rough idea of the wall and the books is plenty to start with.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall, check how it’s built and plan spans and depths with you.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, including spray or hand painting.
- We build the shelving in our workshop, sizing each shelf for what it carries.
- Fitting day: the bookcase goes in, is levelled and scribed, and fixed securely.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are

How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which suits uprights, side panels and doors. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Let the paint cure fully before loading heavy books.
