Built-in bookshelves in Alperton
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
- We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
Arranging a design visit
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.
Advice
How we make built-in bookshelves for Alperton
Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a room lined with books and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy.
Around Alperton, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Alperton
Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in Alperton?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do you cover homes near Wembley Central station?
Yes. We cover all of Brent and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?
The fitting depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is made in our workshop first.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, with adjustable ones in between.
How do you stop shelves from sagging?
Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, adding a lip or support on longer runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.
Looking after your furniture
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves
- Allow room for the collection to grow
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Let us know where the heaviest things will go
Load the shelves gradually and evenly. Keep the heaviest books low and close to the supports.
If you see damp behind or near the shelving, look into it early. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Making new openings, removing walls or other structural work
- Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standalone bookcases leave gaps at the top and sides, and on a wall that is not straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit.
