Wall beds in Willesden Green

Studio flats benefit more than most from a bed that folds away. By day, the room is a living space; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet to make the most of the wall. People usually come to us about more floor space in a studio flat and hiding the bed when it’s not in use; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Willesden Green were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Common questions about wall beds

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Willesden Green?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Willesden Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the room. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Willesden Green homes and wall beds

About 69% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Willesden Green went up before 1919, and about 11% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Willesden Green, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Willesden Green is on or beside a main road, it’s useful to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live in a flat close to Kensal Rise station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Donnington Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Do you need wall beds in Willesden Green?

Studio flats and small one-bedroom flats are another reason. A bed that folds up gives you a living room in the day and a bedroom at night.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use
  • A studio that works by day and night
  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A study that doubles as a spare room

Close to Roundwood Park? Wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

How fitting works for wall beds

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. The wall bed is fitted in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, message us from the contact page.

Where other trades come in

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Structural work to the wall or floor
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Wiring for lights or chargers

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan wall beds. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Think about where extra bedding will go

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.
