How we make walk-in wardrobes for Albany Park
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. If you’re living with a use for a small spare room and shelves for shoes and bags, walk-in wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, so storage normally goes on the walls beside or opposite. Many homes around Albany Park were built in the post-war decades, so it is a layout worth planning for. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made wardrobe systems are easy to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape. In a plain post-war room, standalone pieces stand proud of the wall with nothing to frame them, while a fitted run can create its own recesses.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit.
Why us?

- Saturday work by prior arrangement

Albany Park homes and walk-in wardrobes
In the area around Albany Park, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Albany Park, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bexley has its own. Depending on your street in Albany Park, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know what the parking is like at the design visit.
Danson House, about 2.2 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Manor House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What affects the price in Albany Park
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What we need to know
Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Your postcode and the borough
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Building work to create the room
- Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
- Plastering, decorating or flooring
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for each. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit.
- You contact us about a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.
- We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We carry the sections in, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Albany Park
Can you make walk-in wardrobes for a home in Albany Park?
Yes, we work across Bexley, Albany Park included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Albany Park?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How much time does fitting need?
Every room is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?
It’s your choice. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can you turn a small spare room into a dressing room?
Often, yes. A box room can take hanging, shelves and drawers on its walls and still leave room to move. We check the room at the design visit.
The problems walk-in wardrobes solve
Sharing one wardrobe between two rarely works for long. We can design separate areas for hanging, shelves and drawers, so neither of you is squeezed.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- Turning a box room into a dressing room
- The right mix of long and short hanging
- A dressing table with drawers and a mirror
- More space for clothes and shoes
For an older house near St Lawrence church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.
What to check before you book
