Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Aldersbrook
Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are not enough hanging space and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. That layout is worth knowing around Aldersbrook, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards, leaving the breast itself clear. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Materials and finishes
Hanging rails
We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.
Plinths and scribe strips
In period rooms, we typically scribe the sides and the top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.
From workshop to your room
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Fitted bedroom furniture in Aldersbrook
About 55% of the homes in the streets around Aldersbrook went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Aldersbrook, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 55% of homes in the area around Aldersbrook were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that aren’t straight.
The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north of the centre of Aldersbrook, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Gabriel, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Aldersbrook
I live near Wanstead Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Aldersbrook?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Can I send pictures before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Parking near your home
- The width and height of the space
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What we need to know
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
