TV and media units in Aldersbrook: what you get

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. Ventilation is planned into the design. It’s worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and clutter around the TV.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Aldersbrook, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about during the design visit. The top of the furniture can stop at the picture rail or carry on to the cornice, whichever suits the room.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You let us know about the room and what the unit needs to hold, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Is bespoke worth it?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

FAQs: TV and media units in Aldersbrook

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Aldersbrook?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live near Wanstead Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Redbridge and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Electrical work is not something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to use our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Living-room carpentry in Aldersbrook: local notes

In the streets around Aldersbrook, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aldersbrook include Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Church of St Gabriel (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Aldersbrook is covered by it. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For an older house near Church of St Gabriel, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Wanstead Park station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated cabinets

Is it time for TV and media units?

Equipment on the floor is another reason. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space, and keeps the floor clear.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

The wider area includes historic houses like Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
