Loft storage in Aldersbrook: what you get

A converted loft often has more storage space than it first seems. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, all made for the shape of the room. For a home in Aldersbrook, it starts with a design visit to measure and talk it through. If you’re living with a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and wasted space behind the knee walls, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

With a large share of homes around Aldersbrook built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Measure the loft stairs, the turns and the landing
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything isn’t right with the storage, use our contact form and we will talk it through.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat doesn’t do its job. If you notice damp or condensation behind the eaves, ask whoever converted the loft.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.

Birch plywood

Its layered build gives birch plywood its strength. We use it for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes, with the edge either shown or painted.

Your questions about loft storage in Aldersbrook

Do you make loft storage for homes in Aldersbrook?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Aldersbrook included, and across the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aldersbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not if it’s planned with care. The storage is planned around the insulation and ventilation behind the knee wall. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

Aldersbrook homes and loft storage

About 55% of the homes in the streets around Aldersbrook went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aldersbrook include Church of St Mary (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Church of St Gabriel (Grade II), less than half a mile west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The share of homes built before 1919 around Aldersbrook, about 55%, is well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of eaves cupboards.

Valentines Mansion, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. For a flat near Wanstead Park station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people want to hide clutter in the eaves. Cupboards behind the knee wall hide them away. It keeps the room tidy.

Loft storage can help with:

  • Standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage

If your children go to Aldersbrook Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
