Fitted cupboards for homes in Balham

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors often slope. Every cupboard is scribed, trimmed by hand to meet the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. People usually come to us about cupboards that suit a period house and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Balham date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, especially in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

Questions from Balham

My house in Balham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Balham?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 64% of homes in the streets around Balham were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Do you need fitted cupboards in Balham?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They are not much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner

Close to Wandsworth Common? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

How to choose a carpenter in London

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
