Fitted cupboards for homes in Putney

Few walls in an older house are truly straight, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We work around skirting, coving and picture rails, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. People typically come to us about floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and storage in a corner nothing else fits, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Putney, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while in a flat, the hallway and any recess are the places to look. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay reachable, with the clearances their makers set out.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know in advance helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Fitted storage in Putney

In the area around Putney, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 17 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Putney. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 28% of homes around Putney were built before 1919, well below the figure for Wandsworth as a whole, about 44%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

For a flat near Putney station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 0.6 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Putney is about 2 miles east of Clapham Junction, within the London Borough of Wandsworth. Anywhere in Putney, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Putney is one of the places in Wandsworth where we make fitted cupboards.

We work across the SW15, SW19 and SW13 postcode area. You’ll find streets here such as Putney High Street, Upper Richmond Road and Spencer Walk, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. The A3 and B306 runs close to Putney; on busy main roads, unloading fitted cupboards takes a little planning. We also cover Roehampton (1 mile south-west), Barnes (1 mile north-west), Fulham (1 mile north-east), Mortlake (2 miles west) and Wimbledon Park (2 miles south). Across the rest of Wandsworth, our area takes in Clapham Junction (2 miles east), Battersea (2 miles east), Tooting (3 miles south-east), Tooting Bec (3 miles south-east), Balham (3 miles south-east) and Southfields (2 miles south-east). Being one of the larger places in Wandsworth, Putney is covered for all of our fitted furniture.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Putney?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you cover homes near Putney station?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It is one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Putney

Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Sloping floors, walls that lean and odd alcove widths leave gaps that collect dust and look untidy. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler

If your children go to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
