How we make fitted cupboards for Battersea
Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. Most enquiries start with storage in a corner nothing else fits and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Older homes like many around Battersea have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around Battersea date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Fitted cupboards for homes in Battersea
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Battersea were built before 1919 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Battersea is in the Clapham Junction Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 49% of households in the neighbourhood around Battersea, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
If you live near Imperial Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mark, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Battersea, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
Battersea is about 1 mile north-west of Clapham Junction, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. From period terraces to newer flats in Battersea, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Battersea among 15 places we cover in Wandsworth.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Questions we are often asked
My home in Battersea is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Battersea?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
What do fitted cupboards cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap at the side or a space above. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so less space goes to waste. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What happens on fitting day
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

Advice
How it’s made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site, after the cupboards are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch in.
Spray-painted finish
For a smooth, even look, spray painting is a good choice, and it is finished before fitting day.
