Fitted wardrobes in Balham, Wandsworth
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Balham starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A sloping ceiling that is hard to use
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Mismatched bedroom furniture

About our fitted wardrobes in Balham
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are mismatched bedroom furniture and no space in front for doors to swing.
Around Balham, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

From workshop to your room
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.
Before we arrive
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Getting a quote
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Balham?
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.
Fitted wardrobes can help with:
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
For families living near Ravenstone Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How parking will work on your street
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Questions we’re often asked
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Balham?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Balham?
Yes, Balham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
When is bespoke worth it?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Tips worth knowing
People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help whatever the room:
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
Do not pack clothes tight against the back panel. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.
Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.

Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 9 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Balham. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. For fitting in Balham, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking is worth mentioning at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
If you live near Wandsworth Common, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

How it is made
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the wardrobes are fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up, and it works well in a period bedroom.
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth lifts the wardrobe and hides an uneven floor. Its height can be set to match the skirting.
