Fitted cupboards in Grange Mills

Our fitted cupboards are made for homes in Grange Mills and all over London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, and then send you a quote. The cupboards are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a neat cupboard around the boiler and built-in storage that matches the woodwork.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace usually has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Grange Mills were built before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Shallow units keep the way through clear.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

What happens on fitting day

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and discuss the layout. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Fitted storage in Grange Mills

In the neighbourhood around Grange Mills, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Grange Mills is within about a quarter of a mile of the La Retraite Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than half of the homes in the area around Grange Mills (about 55%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age have lots of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight.

Near listed buildings like The Bedford Hotel, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Grange Mills, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Wandsworth Common, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to Balham station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Grange Mills?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Grange Mills?

Yes. Grange Mills is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Practical tips

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Leave room in front of the meters

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It is worth keeping a record of the colour.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it is best done early.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make doors in a style that suits the room and finish them to match. Drawers below the doors suit shoes and small items.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
