Fitted cupboards in Southfields

Questions from Southfields

I live in a flat in Southfields. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Southfields?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What are your cupboards made from?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Fitted cupboards in Southfields: what you get

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. People typically come to us about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Southfields were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Moving or servicing a boiler
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Fitted storage in Southfields

Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the streets around Southfields, with about 14% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Southfields, 10 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That typically means a van in Southfields needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 1.9 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For families living near Floreat Wandsworth Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. For an older house near St John the Divine, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Southfields is in the London Borough of Wandsworth, about 2 miles north-east of Clapham Junction. How fitting works for fitted cupboards

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you are likely to move soon and want to take the furniture with you, standalone cupboards may suit you better. Fitted storage is built in for good, and it’s made for this home rather than the next one. How long you’ll stay is worth weighing up. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
