How we make fitted cupboards for Barbican Estate
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a utility room with proper storage and a cupboard for the meters with easy access.
Many homes around Barbican Estate date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. In a house of that age, the stairs often have a cupboard below that can be reworked, while flats tend to have hallways and recesses worth using. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

From workshop to your room
In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it helps to tell us during the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

How we price fitted cupboards
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How big the furniture is
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Your postcode and the borough
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Barbican Estate?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.
How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Barbican Estate?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

A conservation area lies within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Barbican Estate, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in Barbican Estate usually needs a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay arranged through the council. Parking is worth mentioning at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Flats, conversions and lettings
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
