Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

Fitted cupboards in Aldgate: what you get

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. Typical reasons to get in touch are floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Aldgate, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Is bespoke worth it?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that do not suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Aldgate

  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what a quote should include.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Aldgate

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work, and dust is kept to a minimum.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Aldgate, with about 18% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Aldgate include Church of St Katherine Cree (Grade I), less than half a mile west, and Church of St Botolph (Grade I), under half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Newer homes are more common around Aldgate than across the City of London: about 48% date from 2000 onwards, against about 27%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have stud walls and compact rooms, so fixings and sizes are planned with that in mind.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 0.5 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. I live near London Fenchurch Street station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Aldgate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
