About our fitted cupboards in Finsbury

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and tidying away the gas and electricity meters.

Many homes around Finsbury were built since 2000, and across London a lot of homes from those years are flats with compact layouts. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Cupboards can be shallow where space is tight, so the hallway still feels open.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

What affects the price in Finsbury

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Before the design visit

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for a Gas Safe engineer.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Related advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Before and after fitting day

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room

We adjust the doors as part of the fitting. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease, and it’s best done early.

Questions from Finsbury

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Finsbury?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Finsbury?

Yes. Finsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Fitted storage in Finsbury

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Finsbury were built since 2000 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Finsbury is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

If your children go to Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Giles, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Old Street station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
