Fitted cupboards in St Luke's: what you get

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, such as by the front door or in a hallway corner. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If your home has a linen cupboard on the landing and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around St Luke's, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in St Luke's

Do you cover homes near Old Street station?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in St Luke's?

Yes, St Luke's is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

Why bespoke in St Luke's?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it’s built for. Ready-made units fixed to stud walls are often held by fixings that do not suit the board. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board, and heavy pieces can stand on the floor.

We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What it is made from

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled, painted to match the cupboard. Drawers below the doors suit shoes and small items.

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
