Bishopsgate Fitted Cupboards

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Bishopsgate, each designed at a visit to your home.

Fitted storage in Bishopsgate

About 41% of the homes in the area around Bishopsgate went up since 2000, and about 22% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 37 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Bishopsgate. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, the City of London included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Bishopsgate is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

If you live near Finsbury Circus, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. Mansion House, about 0.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Bishopsgate is about 1 mile west of City of London, part of the City of London. We design and make fitted cupboards for homes in Bishopsgate and across the City of London, as part of our work in every London borough. In the City of London, Bishopsgate is one of the places we cover.

We work across the E1, EC2A and EC1Y postcode area. You will find streets here such as Bush Lane, Swan Lane and Love Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted cupboards. How we make fitted cupboards for Bishopsgate

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, and we leave room for their work in the design. Most enquiries start with storage in a corner nothing else fits and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Bishopsgate built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Practical tips

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can usually be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board. Floors are protected throughout, as many newer homes have finished floors that mark easily.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built and finished in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

The usual reason is simple: there’s too much stuff and not enough storage. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A utility room with proper storage
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Guild Church of St Ethelburga the Virgin, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What to check before you book

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near London Liverpool Street station?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bishopsgate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How we price fitted cupboards

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Parking near your home
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

To make a start, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
