Questions from Bedfont

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bedfont?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Bedfont in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. Bedfont is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Fitted cupboards in Bedfont

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If you’re living with landing shelves for bedding and towels and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Bedfont, where many homes date from the post-war decades, you may have wide windows with radiators underneath. Seating over a radiator needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving. Fitted storage can also use the hall, the landing or the space below the stairs, made to fit the room as it is.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Storage in Bedfont homes: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Bedfont, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Bedfont is partly covered by the Bedfont Green Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Bedfont is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a flat close to Heathrow Terminal 4 Rail station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Fawns Manor, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it helps to tell us during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door.

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and usually cost less, and they suit some rooms well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it’s built for. A ready-made unit pushed back to the wall leaves a gap above the skirting, and that gap catches dust and wastes depth. Fitted furniture is scribed over the skirting or set on its own plinth.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

Plinths and scribe strips are small parts that make a big difference in a room where nothing is quite square.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
