How we make wall beds for Bedfont

Our wall beds are made for homes in Bedfont and all over London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know ahead of time. Typical reasons to get in touch are a home office that also sleeps guests and a hobby room with a bed for guests; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many homes around Bedfont date from the post-war decades. Bedrooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, which suits fitted furniture along a full wall. Some post-war homes have an original cupboard over the stairs that can be rebuilt as part of the design. Walls may be concrete, block or brick, so fixings are chosen for the wall.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know in advance helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for the parts that carry the bed. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek front, spray painting works well and is finished before it reaches you.

Bedfont homes and wall beds

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Bedfont were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 16 entries within half a mile of the centre of Bedfont. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For an older house near Church of St Mary, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For a flat near Heathrow Terminal 4 Rail station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Fawns Manor, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How we price wall beds

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

For a quote for wall beds in Bedfont, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, plus any rough sizes. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Questions we’re often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Bedfont in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes. Bedfont is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it at the measuring visit.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet with shelves or a desk beside it. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.

What does a wall bed cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
