Fitted cupboards designed for your room
Fitting day, step by step
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Starting with a design visit

Advice
About our fitted cupboards in Blackfriars
Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves spaced to suit what goes on them. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. People typically come to us about hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and a neat cupboard around the boiler, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Many homes around Blackfriars date from the post-war decades. Post-war homes typically have squarer rooms and fewer nooks than period ones, so fitted cupboards often create the storage the house never had. The fixings are chosen for the wall, whether it is concrete, blockwork or brick.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Where other trades come in
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
- Connecting appliances to water or waste
- Electrical work inside the cupboard

What affects the price in Blackfriars
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How big the furniture is
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Parking near your home
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
Questions we are often asked
My home in Blackfriars is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Blackfriars?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?
MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in the colour agreed with you.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Blackfriars
Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and leaves the room around it clear.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
If you live in a period home close to St Ann Blackfriars, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Where they’ll park and unload
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
Fitted cupboards for homes in Blackfriars
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in the area around Blackfriars, with about 27% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Whitefriars Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Blackfriars. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 27% of homes in the streets around Blackfriars were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are typically plasterboard on studs, so the fixings for fitted cupboards are chosen for the board.

Flats, leases and landlords
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
