How we make fitted cupboards for Temple Bar
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about storage in a corner nothing else fits and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are usually solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Temple Bar date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Is bespoke worth it?
Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Temple Bar
Off-the-shelf cupboards rarely suit older houses. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top that collect dust and look untidy. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.
Fitted cupboards can help with:
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
- A utility room with proper storage
- Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
For a flat near City Thameslink station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Where they’ll park and unload
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You contact us about fitted cupboards.
- At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in. It helps to let us know about parking then, as a van usually needs a permit or a paid bay in a controlled parking zone.
- We send a quote in writing.
- In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Making good walls after other work
- Any plumbing in a utility room
- Wiring for lights or sockets
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Common questions about fitted cupboards
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in Temple Bar?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Temple Bar?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit. The whole City of London is also inside the Congestion Charge zone, and the ULEZ covers every London borough.
How long will the cupboards take to fit?
It depends on the job. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.
