Fitted cupboards for homes in Temple

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Plumbing is for your plumber and new sockets for your electrician, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If you’re living with tall cupboards where space is short and storage for towels and bedding, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. A large share of the homes around Temple were built before 1919, so depth matters as much as width wherever storage goes. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Fitting day, step by step

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. We visit to measure up and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Questions from Temple

My home in Temple is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Temple?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Can you build cupboards for a boot room?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing, from coats and boots to laundry and cleaning things. We’re carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

Fitted storage in Temple

About 48% of the homes in the streets around Temple went up before 1919, and about 22% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Temple is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which covers the whole City of London. Deliveries and fitting days are planned with the zone’s rules and the City’s loading restrictions in mind.

For families living near St Clement Danes CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is one of the older houses near Temple Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Making good walls after other work

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Some spaces are just hard to use. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • Making use of an awkward alcove or corner
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork

If you live near Garden Bridge, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

For meter cupboards, the doors or panels are designed for easy access for engineers and meter readers.

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you’ll store, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

Is bespoke worth it?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
