Making use of tricky spaces in Bankside

Homes built since 2000 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Bankside, with about 19% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Bankside, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Benet (Grade I), under half a mile north, and College of Arms (Grade I), under half a mile north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 81% of households in the area around Bankside live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary Mounthaw, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. Living in a block of flats near London Blackfriars station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.6 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Fitted cupboards in Bankside

Walls in period homes are rarely flat or square, and floors and ceilings can be out of level too. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall, then set level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Skirting boards, picture rails and coving are cut around or met neatly, so the cupboard sits comfortably in the room. If your home has a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and a cupboard for a recess or odd corner, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a home built since 2000, there are often spaces the builder left plain, like a recess, a landing corner or an empty cupboard. Around Bankside, many homes were built since 2000, and fitted storage can make spaces like that far more useful. Drawers and shelves can make use of the full depth.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.

Plinths and scribe strips

We use a plinth to set the cupboard level on an uneven floor. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that is not straight.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, which is a fair point in their favour. Ours takes more planning: a design visit, a quote, making and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, while fitted furniture comes in sections sized for the route. It’s then assembled and fixed in the room.

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so we protect the route before carrying anything in. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The sections are carried in, joined and set level. The finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand on site.

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Questions from Bankside

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Bankside?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Bankside?

Yes. Bankside is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

What are your cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them is not our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
