Fitted cupboards in Canonbury, Islington

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Canonbury starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

How we make fitted cupboards for Canonbury

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. People typically come to us about storage in a corner nothing else fits and tidying away the gas and electricity meters, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Canonbury, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It helps to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. If the flat is leasehold, the lease may need checking before fitted cupboards are fixed to the walls.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitted storage in Canonbury

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Canonbury were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). There are 161 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Canonbury. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 20% of households in the area around Canonbury, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so details of bays, permits or a loading area help. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. You receive a quote in writing.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you as your storage changes.

Let us know about parking and access during the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

I live near Canonbury station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Canonbury is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Canonbury

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as St Paul's Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
