Mildmay Fitted Cupboards

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted cupboards for homes in Mildmay, each designed at a visit to your home.

Fitted cupboards in Mildmay

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If you’re living with cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving and landing shelves for bedding and towels, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Older homes like many around Mildmay have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of the homes around Mildmay date from then. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that isn’t. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

How it’s made

Birch plywood

Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.

Shelves

Adjustable shelves let you change the layout later as your storage changes.

Fitted cupboards in Mildmay: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Mildmay were built before 1919 (about 48%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Matthias, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.4 miles east. What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and discuss the design.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Mildmay?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Mildmay?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

How long does fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly and still leaves them reachable. Moving them is not our work, as that is a job for your supplier or electrician.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Is bespoke worth it?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable and fitted joinery can be designed around them. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings, with panels and details to suit the house.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.
