Fitted cupboards in Nag's Head

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving.

A large share of the homes around Nag's Head were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice

Pricing fitted cupboards in Nag's Head

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 52% of the housing in the streets around Nag's Head, with about 19% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Purpose-built flats are home to about 50% of households in the streets around Nag's Head, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Close to Whittington Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your children go to Grafton Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, especially on a colder external wall. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Questions from Nag's Head

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Nag's Head?

Yes, Nag's Head is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Can you build a cupboard over the fuse board and meters?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away without getting in the way of access. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Nag's Head

Sometimes the aim is to make storage look like part of the room. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

The wider area includes historic houses like Witanhurst, about 1.7 miles north-west. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
