Fitted cupboards for your home in Highbury
Questions from Highbury
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Highbury?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London, and Highbury is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
My house in Highbury is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
What do fitted cupboards cost?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Do I need the building owner’s consent?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
How we make fitted cupboards for Highbury
Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. The doors are planned so they open cleanly on a narrow landing. Most enquiries start with storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A large share of the homes around Highbury were built before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What else we make in Highbury
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
- Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
If you live near Highbury Fields, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.
Choosing a carpenter
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Fitted cupboards in Highbury: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 50% of the housing in the area around Highbury, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Highbury is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than a third of the homes in the area around Highbury (about 50%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age have lots of recesses, from hallway nooks to alcoves, and walls that are rarely straight.
For a family home near Highbury Quadrant Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Sutton House, about 2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Moving gas or electricity meters
- Any plumbing in a utility room
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Ventilated doors
- Adjustable shelves
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.
Getting in touch
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. You choose the colour.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, which makes it good for shelves and drawer boxes. You can leave the layered edge on show or paint it.
From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- We start with a short note from you about the space and what it needs to hold.
- We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and talk through the layout. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- The cupboards are made at our workshop.
- The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.
