How we make fitted cupboards for De Beauvoir Town

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. People typically come to us about a neat cupboard around the boiler and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

With most households around De Beauvoir Town in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern developments are both possible. Older mansion block flats can have bays, long corridors and tall ceilings with space to use, while newer flats tend to have compact halls and boxed-in services. In a maisonette, the space under the internal stairs is worth using.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know about parking near your home

  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

De Beauvoir Town homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built before 1919 make up about 39% of the housing in the neighbourhood around De Beauvoir Town, with about 25% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 105 entries within half a mile of the centre of De Beauvoir Town. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted cupboards can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Hackney included. Vans bringing furniture to De Beauvoir Town fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. For a flat near Dalston Junction station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Is bespoke worth it?

A flat-pack or ready-made cupboard is quick to buy and often cheaper, and in a square room they can work well. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely sit flush. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it is built for. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can usually be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it’s useful to know this early.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in De Beauvoir Town?

Yes. De Beauvoir Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, it is something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How much time does fitting need?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly

For families living near Our Lady and St Joseph Catholic Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
