Dormers Wells Fitted Cupboards

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Fitted cupboards arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. We visit to measure up and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

How we make fitted cupboards for Dormers Wells

A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. If your home has cupboards for a utility or boot room and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Dormers Wells, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Fitted cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Is Dormers Wells in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London, and Dormers Wells is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Dormers Wells?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What are your cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. We spray paint in the workshop or hand paint, in a colour you choose.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Storage in Dormers Wells homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Dormers Wells were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Dormers Wells, Historic England’s list includes Grove House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Red Lion Public House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Terraced houses are home to about 33% of households in the area around Dormers Wells, the 2021 Census shows. London terraces tend to have narrow hallways and odd recesses that fitted cupboards can use.

For an older house near Emmanuel Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. The wider area includes historic houses such as Osterley House, about 1.9 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way. If you live near Castle Bar Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you’ll store, whether that’s linen or cleaning things. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. You choose the colour.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

There’s a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is normally the better answer. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit.

What you get with us

  • Every London borough and the City of London covered

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
