Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You let us know where the cupboards should go.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
Arranging a design visit
To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Advice
How we make fitted cupboards for Ealing
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. If your home has a cupboard for the meters with easy access and a utility room with proper storage, fitted cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
With a large share of homes around Ealing built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age too, and good places for seating with storage below.
You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It is a good choice for utility rooms and cupboards on external walls.
Doors and drawer fronts
In a narrow hallway, the way doors open matters, so the doors clear the walls and stairs.
What else we make in Ealing
The problems fitted cupboards solve
Some spaces are just hard to use. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
- Tall cupboards where space is short
- Storage in a corner nothing else fits
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
Close to Walpole Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

- Can you see real work of theirs?

Fitted storage in Ealing
In the area around Ealing, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Ealing. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and the rest of London sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Pitzhanger Manor House, under half a mile east of the centre of Ealing, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live in a flat close to Ealing Broadway station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Ealing is one of London’s 33 local authority areas. We cover Ealing as part of our work across the rest of London. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?
Off-the-shelf cupboards are quicker to get and normally cost less, and they suit some rooms well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to leave gaps. A fitted cupboard is a bigger outlay, but it fits the space it is built for. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Questions from Ealing
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Ealing?
Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Does a conservation area in or near Ealing affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
How long will the cupboards take to fit?
Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.
