Fitted cupboards in Ealing: how it works

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it is trimmed to the walls so there are no awkward gaps. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a hallway cupboard for coats and shoes and cupboards for a utility or boot room.

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

What goes into your quote

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What you get with us

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted storage across Ealing

Homes across Ealing are full of odd corners, from stair voids to loft eaves. Each design is made to the space itself, then built in our workshop and fitted.

About 30% of the homes in Ealing went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 28% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in Ealing (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage. 4 of the 19 places in Ealing with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in Ealing are well within our area. If you are unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Ealing: If you live near Walpole Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Ealing Independent College, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

What we do not do

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

What it’s made from

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you’ll store, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.

What prompts fitted cupboards

Standard cupboards don’t sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that aren’t square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A built-in cupboard follows the room instead.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Using the full height of a room
  • A utility room with proper storage

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, so it is useful to know this early.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
