Fitted cupboards in Northfields: what you get
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and the cupboard is built to respect them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. If you’re living with hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Hallways in period terraces are often long and narrow, with the stairs rising along one wall. Around Northfields, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What fitted cupboards can’t fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Building work or structural changes
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Moving gas or electricity meters
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How it works.
What goes into it
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Adjustable shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
Why bespoke in Northfields?
A ready-made cupboard rarely suits a boiler or meter. The space needs to suit the boiler’s instructions and leave meters reachable, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What you get with us
- More than 300 projects completed
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Built around your room
- Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight

Questions from Northfields
Do you cover homes near Brentford station?
Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is Northfields in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes. Northfields is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.
What are the cupboards made of?
Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.
Tips worth knowing
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Mention any parking or lift rules
- Think about how the cupboards will get in
- Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can usually be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Making use of awkward spaces in Northfields
About 63% of the homes in the streets around Northfields went up before 1919, and about 19% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Northfields. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Ealing is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Northfields, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
If your children go to Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Boston Manor House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Boston Manor, about 0.5 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

How fitting day works
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it is useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Getting ready for fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
