Wall beds for homes in Dormers Wells

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed at the measuring visit, so you can choose a mattress that works. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a guest bed that disappears in the day and a hobby room with a bed for guests.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and that slope can be used for storage built to the angle. Around Dormers Wells, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Pricing wall beds in Dormers Wells

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

Before the design visit

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

What prompts wall beds in Dormers Wells

The most common reason is a spare room that’s rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A spare room that’s rarely slept in
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

If you live near Castle Bar Park, wall beds are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Then we can work out where to load and unload.

FAQs: wall beds in Dormers Wells

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Dormers Wells?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Southall station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How much time does fitting need?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What it’s made from

Bed mechanism housing

We build the housing to suit the mechanism, fixed securely as its maker specifies. When the bed is up, the front looks like cupboard doors.

Shelves

Shelves can go above or beside the bed cabinet for books, boxes or display.
