Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat

Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

About our fitted cupboards in Acton

We fit fitted cupboards in Acton and across London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, and then send you a quote. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. People usually come to us about cupboards that suit a period house and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Where housing is mixed, as in much of London, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Fitted cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room isn’t. You choose the paint colour, and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

If you are likely to move soon and want to take the furniture with you, standalone cupboards may suit you better. A fitted cupboard is part of the room, and it’s made for this home rather than the next one. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. It can be painted in a colour chosen for that room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

What you get with us

  • A design visit, then a quote in writing
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you at the design visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Advice

Fitted storage in Acton

Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the area around Acton, with about 28% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Acton, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 28% of homes in the streets around Acton were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Gunnersbury Park, about 1.4 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If your children go to Derwentwater Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Ealing Common, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Acton

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Acton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Acton Central station?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood helps. Span, depth and load all matter.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the cupboard off the floor and hides adjustable feet. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
