Fitted cupboards in Strawberry Hill: what you get
Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a utility room with proper storage and a neat cupboard around the boiler.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. Around Strawberry Hill, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit.

What affects the price in Strawberry Hill
The price for your room depends on:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The overall size of the piece
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Before the design visit
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- A utility room with proper storage
- Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
- Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
- Using the full height of a room
If you live in a flat close to Strawberry Hill station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
How fitting works for fitted cupboards
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out.
- We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
- At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Is bespoke worth it?
You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, which is a fair point in their favour. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Strawberry Hill
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Strawberry Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Strawberry Hill affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How are fitted cupboards priced?
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes, and we keep them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
