FAQs: fitted cupboards in Forest Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Forest Hill?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Is Forest Hill in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Forest Hill is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

What materials do you use for fitted cupboards?

Our cupboards are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Fitted cupboards in Forest Hill

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. A shallow cupboard can hold coats, shoes and bags without blocking the way, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. Some people like a low bench with storage beneath for putting shoes on by the door. We make fitted cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about making use of an awkward alcove or corner and landing shelves for bedding and towels.

Around Forest Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and older houses have lots of odd corners: the space under the stairs, the bay at the front, the alcoves, the hallway recesses and, where the loft has been converted, the eaves. That is where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitted cupboards in Forest Hill: local notes

About 57% of the homes in the area around Forest Hill went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Forest Hill include Fairlawn School (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Folly Tower in Back Garden of Number 23 (Grade II), under half a mile west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 28% of households in the streets around Forest Hill live in flats in converted or shared houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If you live in a flat close to Honor Oak Park station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Honor Oak Christian Fellowship Centre, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 1.6 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Forest Hill is about 2 miles north-east of New Cross, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Wherever you are in Forest Hill, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Lewisham, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

Here we cover the SE23, SE22 and SE26 postcode area for fitted cupboards. We also cover the places around Forest Hill: Honor Oak (1 mile north), Perry Vale (1 mile south-east), Brockley (1 mile north-east), Crofton Park (1 mile north-east) and Dulwich (1 mile west). We also make fitted cupboards in nearby places like New Cross (2 miles north-east), St Johns (2 miles north-east), Deptford (3 miles north-east), Catford (2 miles east), Lewisham (2 miles north-east) and Surrey Canal (3 miles north).

How we price fitted cupboards

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Measure the route into the room not just the room
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can usually be set right at the hinge.

Any damp should be dealt with before furniture goes against a wall. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it’s needed.

Honest limits

Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Connecting appliances to water or waste
  • Moving gas or electricity meters

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
