FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Forest Hill
How do you fit walk-in wardrobes in a flat in Forest Hill?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Walk-in wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Forest Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?
How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Can you put a walk-in wardrobe in part of a bedroom?
Yes. We design the units to make a dressing area within the bedroom, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Forest Hill
Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, and open rails make it quick to find things. We’ll talk through the options at the measuring visit. Most enquiries start with a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and somewhere for shoes to live; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Victorian and Edwardian bedrooms typically have a chimney breast on one wall and a recess either side. A large share of the homes around Forest Hill date from before 1919, so many bedrooms there may share that layout. Storage can go in each recess, with a bridge of cupboards over the chimney breast. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the walk-in wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes in Forest Hill
Homes built before 1919 make up about 57% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Forest Hill, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Forest Hill include Fairlawn School (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Folly Tower in Back Garden of Number 23 (Grade II), under half a mile west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Forest Hill is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Kingswood House, about 1.6 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go. If your home is one of the older houses near Honor Oak Christian Fellowship Centre, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Could you do it yourself?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
Do you need walk-in wardrobes in Forest Hill?
Some people want a calmer bedroom. With clothes in a dressing room, the bedroom can feel more restful.
A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:
- Somewhere for shoes to live
- A side each for a couple
- A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
- A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
For families living near Fairlawn Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
Choosing a carpenter
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
What walk-in wardrobes can’t fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Plastering, decorating or flooring
- New lights or sockets
- Curing damp in the walls
