Fitted Cupboards in Dulwich

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in Dulwich starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
  • A utility room with proper storage

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

About our fitted cupboards in Dulwich

The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, depending on what each part needs to do. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. We finish them by spray painting in the workshop or by hand painting, in a colour agreed with you. If you’re living with a neat cupboard around the boiler and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. With a large share of the homes around Dulwich built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Honest limits

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Ventilated doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish

Questions from Dulwich

I live near West Dulwich station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Dulwich?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The size, the inside layout and the finish all make a difference. For a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour agreed with you.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so fitted cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, so there’s less to do on site.

Plinths and scribe strips

Plinths and scribe strips are small parts that make a big difference in a room where nothing is quite square.

Making use of awkward spaces in Dulwich

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Dulwich were built before 1919 (about 73%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Dulwich, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Dulwich. How the van gets to your door is planned at the measuring visit.

Close to Dulwich Park? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Near listed buildings like Bell House, less than half a mile west of the centre of Dulwich, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to St Anthony's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, which is a fair point in their favour. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
