How we make fitted cupboards for Crofton Park

Utility rooms and boot rooms need storage that copes with everyday wear. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. If your home has using the full height of a room and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

With a large share of homes around Crofton Park built before 1919, the space under the stairs in a terraced house often holds the gas meter, the electricity meter or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Neither choice is right for every home. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. For awkward spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Crofton Park?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Crofton Park?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Crofton Park is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, and that shapes the design. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes

Close to Blythe Hill Fields? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Fitted cupboards in Crofton Park: local notes

In the streets around Crofton Park, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 57%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Crofton Park, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Hilda (Grade II), less than half a mile west, and Church Hall of St Hilda's (Grade II), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. In Crofton Park, a van will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

Caring for painted furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Think about what each cupboard will hold

New paintwork takes a while to harden fully after fitting. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and avoid heavy cleaning. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.

It’s useful to list what you want to store before we measure. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, so it helps to know this early.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. We start with the space and what you want to store, including anything tricky like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

How to get a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
