Fitted cupboards in Longlands: what you get

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. We can build a cupboard that tidies them away and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are cupboards that suit a period house and tidying away the gas and electricity meters.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Longlands, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Fitted storage in Longlands

About 39% of the homes in the area around Longlands went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Longlands is within about a quarter of a mile of the Chislehurst Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bexley is inside it. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Longlands. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

Close to Waring Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. If your children go to Longlands Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Longlands

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Eltham station?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

What fitted cupboards cannot fix

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician
  • Wiring for lights or sockets

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Flat-pack cupboards can be put together quickly by a confident DIYer, which is a fair point in their favour. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are. Doors, shelves and rails are agreed then too.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cupboards are fitted and trimmed to the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Starting with a design visit

Advice

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

To get a quote for fitted cupboards in Longlands, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.
