Fitted cupboards in New Eltham
A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and cupboards for a utility or boot room.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around New Eltham, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
FAQs: fitted cupboards in New Eltham
Is New Eltham in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?
Yes. We cover all of Greenwich and the rest of London, and New Eltham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in New Eltham?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and set it level on adjustable feet or a plinth. That is one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store.
- We come to your home for a design visit, measure the space and go through the layout.
- A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop.
- We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Getting a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made units are made in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap at the side or a space above. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, which can add a good deal of storage. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Making use of tricky spaces in New Eltham
In the area around New Eltham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. New Eltham is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in New Eltham is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
If you live in a period home close to All Saints Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Near listed buildings like Southend House, about 0.6 miles north-west of the centre of New Eltham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your children go to Wyborne Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

How it’s made
Shelves
We plan shelf heights around what you will store, from towels and bedding to tins and boxes. Long spans need a thicker shelf or a support.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.
Looking after your furniture
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
- List what you want to store before the design visit
- Treat new paintwork gently at first
- Measure the route into the room not just the room
Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can typically be set right at the hinge.
Let us know about parking and access during the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.
