Why bespoke in Longlands?
With off-the-shelf shelving, you’re limited to the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose, so they can match the walls or stand out. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why work with us in Longlands
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Built around your room

Built-in bookshelves for homes in Longlands
Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling. For a home in Longlands, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. Most enquiries start with shelving behind a desk for books and files and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Plenty of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Longlands, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives built-in bookshelves a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Living-room storage in Longlands
About 39% of the homes in the streets around Longlands went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Longlands, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bexley is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Longlands. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
For an older house near Christ Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. Living in a block of flats near New Eltham station? Then built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in Longlands?
Some want a room that works as a library or a study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels, and can include a desk or a window seat.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- Shelving behind a desk for books and files
- Shelves that sag under books
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Low shelves children can reach
For a family home near Longlands Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Questions from Longlands
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Longlands?
Yes. Longlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Eltham station?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?
It depends on the wall, which is why we look at it first. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall into sound structure. If a wall is not suitable, we’ll tell you and suggest another approach.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
From workshop to your room
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
- We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
- We then send a written quote for the bookshelves.
- We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
- The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Flats, leases and landlords
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for uprights, panels and faces. It suits shelving on an external wall, which can be colder.
Birch plywood
How much a shelf bends depends on its span and what it carries. Birch plywood is stiff, which helps long shelves stay flat.
