Questions from Longlands
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Eltham station?
Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Longlands?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, if the loft is already a converted room. Headroom is the main thing to plan around, so the desk sits where you can stand up. Lower areas can take cupboards and shelves.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Fitted home offices in Longlands
Planning the cables early is what keeps a home office tidy. Cable holes and routes are built into the desk and cupboards. Any new sockets are fitted by your electrician, with the furniture designed to suit. We look at the sockets when we visit in Longlands. People usually come to us about a screen that’s hard to read by the window and work things on show in the evening; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Longlands, a converted loft can be a quiet place to work, with storage tucked under the slope. For lofts, we work in rooms already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, an alcove beside a chimney breast or a bay can take a desk.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
What happens on fitting day
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
- We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets.
- We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
- We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Empty the space we will be working in

What else we make in Longlands
Working from home in Longlands
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the streets around Longlands, with about 22% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Longlands is within about a quarter of a mile of the Chislehurst Conservation Area. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. About 50% of households in the neighbourhood around Longlands live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. For families living near Longlands Primary School, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework. Eltham Palace, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.
Longlands is in the London Borough of Bexley, about 1 mile east of Sidcup. From period terraces to newer flats in Longlands, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We cover places right across Bexley.
Here we cover the DA15, DA14 and SE9 postcode area for fitted home offices. You’ll find streets here such as Main Road, Alder Road and Sidcup Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted home offices. Other parts of Bexley we cover include Welling (2 miles north-east), Erith (5 miles north-east), Bexley (2 miles east), Belvedere (5 miles north-east), Northumberland Heath (5 miles north-east) and Lessness Heath (5 miles north-east).

Green spaces nearby include The Tarn.
What affects the cost of fitted home offices
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The width and height of the space
- How many doors and drawers there are
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Examples of the look you are after
- Approximate measurements of the space
- How you want to use the space
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bespoke furniture lets the desk, shelves and cupboards be planned together. Separate off-the-shelf pieces seldom match in height or depth. The result is a calmer, more ordered room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
