Fitted cupboards for homes in Lower Holloway

Landings often have a corner or a stretch of wall that does nothing. A fitted cupboard there can hold towels, bedding and the things that never quite find a home, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. People typically come to us about tall cupboards where space is short and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Lower Holloway live in purpose-built flats, so the sections for fitted cupboards are planned at the measuring visit. Common parts are protected while the pieces come in.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Storage in Lower Holloway homes: local notes

About 44% of the homes in the area around Lower Holloway went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Lower Holloway is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. So a van fitting furniture in Lower Holloway usually needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

Close to St Mary Magdalene Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Clock Tower, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Is Lower Holloway in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes, Lower Holloway is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Islington and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lower Holloway?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How long does fitting take?

Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned to open easily.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, that is part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Work on a boiler, which is for a Gas Safe engineer

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Lower Holloway

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Parking near your home

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Lower Holloway

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. We often build into recesses, corridor ends and corners that standard furniture cannot use, and make them useful.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Cupboards that suit a period house

The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 2 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
