About our fitted cupboards in Angel

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. People usually come to us about a linen cupboard on the landing and cupboards that suit a period house; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. With most households around Angel in purpose-built flats, that is often the starting point. A shallow cupboard in a hall or a seat with drawers can hold a surprising amount.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and what it needs. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Advice

Fitted cupboards for homes in Angel

About 39% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Angel went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Angel include Sadler House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Wells House (Grade II*), under half a mile south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. All of London, Islington included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Angel. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

If you live near Barnard Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Living in a block of flats near London Kings Cross station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Angel

Alcoves and odd corners are another reason. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Making use of an tricky alcove or corner
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Tall cupboards where space is short

If you live in a period home close to St Mark's Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Angel

Is parking a problem for fitting in Angel?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Angel affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

How much does a fitted cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each cupboard is different, so we quote once we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. It’s one of the reasons fitted joinery suits period homes.

What are the cupboards made of?

MDF for smooth painted parts and birch plywood for shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in a colour you choose.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit
  • Keep boiler vents and meter access clear

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Houses move a little with the seasons, so the hinges allow small adjustments later. A door that starts to rub can normally be set right at the hinge.

If there is damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. A cupboard on a damp wall can trap moisture, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. Ventilation inside the cupboard helps too.
