Fitted cupboards in Clerkenwell
Our fitted cupboards are made for homes in Clerkenwell and all over London. We begin with a design visit to measure and go through the design, followed by a written quote. The cupboards are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your home has landing shelves for bedding and towels and cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving, fitted cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Clerkenwell, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Fitted cupboards are made in sections that fit the stairs, lift and doors, then assembled in place. If a boiler or consumer unit sits in a cupboard, it keeps its clearances and access.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.
- You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
- At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for. Boiler work itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
- You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
Preparing the room
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:
- Leave room in front of the meters
- Go easy on new doors for a while
- Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
- Think about what each cupboard will hold
If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can normally be touched in. Spray-painted finishes are smooth and even, and small marks can often be cleaned off with a soft cloth. It’s worth keeping a record of the colour.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.
Questions from Clerkenwell
I live in a flat in Clerkenwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Clerkenwell?
Yes. Clerkenwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Islington and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes. Each cupboard is trimmed to the shape of the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

What prompts fitted cupboards in Clerkenwell
Most people come to us because things have nowhere to go. Coats end up over the banister and shoes spread across the hall. A cupboard built for the space gives everything a place and clears the floor.
Requests we hear often include:
- Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
- Cupboards for a utility or boot room
- Using the full height of a room
The wider area includes historic houses such as Dr Johnson's House, about 0.8 miles south. For a period home anywhere nearby, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. Ours are built to the full width and height you choose, which can add a good deal of storage. Ready-made units can’t follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, leaving gaps or blocking access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
