Tips worth knowing
Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:
- Make sure any shutters still open fully
- Plan the cushion early so the seat suits it
- Choose a colour that suits the room
- Let us know about parking near your home
In winter, windows can run with condensation, so keep the area behind the seat dry. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll help.
Do not block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.
Window seats in Nag's Head: what you get
A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. For a home in Nag's Head, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and discuss the design. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about toys spread across a bedroom floor and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Nag's Head date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You contact us with some details about the bay or recess.
- At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
- We send a quote in writing.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.
Getting ready for fitting day

How to get a quote
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Related advice
Do you need window seats in Nag's Head?
A quiet place to read is a common wish. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It quickly becomes a favourite place to sit.
Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:
- Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- No comfortable place to sit in the light
The wider area includes historic houses such as Witanhurst, about 1.7 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

FAQs: window seats in Nag's Head
Do you cover homes near Drayton Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Nag's Head?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, use our contact form.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.
What happens during the design visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.
Will a window seat work below a sash window?
Yes. Seats suit sash windows in many older homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We do not repair sashes or cills.
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It forms most of the visible parts.
Doors and drawer fronts
What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. A radiator grille can be built into the front.
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
