Fitted cupboards in Plaistow, Newham

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Plaistow starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A hallway cupboard for coats and shoes
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A linen cupboard on the landing

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. Every boiler comes with instructions on the space and ventilation around it, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe engineer. Typical reasons to get in touch are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

For heavily loaded cupboards, birch plywood makes a sturdy carcass, like a linen or utility cupboard.

Shelves

We plan shelf heights around what you will store, whether that’s linen or cleaning things. Wide shelves are made stiff enough not to sag.

Is bespoke worth it?

Neither choice is right for every home. In a simple space, off-the-shelf can be enough. For tricky spaces, period rooms or a built-in look, a fitted cupboard tends to earn its place. A standard unit is the same in every home, whatever the room is like, while fitted furniture is drawn for the room it goes into. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why people ask for fitted cupboards in Plaistow

Standard cupboards do not sit well in many period homes. Uneven floors and walls that are not square leave gaps at the sides and top and wasted space above. A fitted cupboard is made to the room’s real shape.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Using the full height of a room
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • Storage for towels and bedding
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags

For a family home near Kaizen Primary School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies at the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Plaistow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to West Ham station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Plaistow is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

For an older house near Memorial Community Church, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size. For a flat near West Ham station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
