Fitted cupboards in Stratford: what you get
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves and drawer boxes. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a neat cupboard around the boiler and cupboards for a utility or boot room.
Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Stratford, many homes were built since 2000, so that’s worth planning for. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- The width and height of the space
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking near your home
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these help most:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you cover homes near Stratford (London) station?
Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
My home in Stratford is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.
Will the cupboards fit my uneven walls?
Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cupboard.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them isn’t our work, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.
- We start with the space and what you want to store.
- We visit to measure and check how level the floor and walls are.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build the cupboards in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
Related advice
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from fitted cupboards starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Let us know how parking works on your street
- Go easy on new doors for a while
- Measure the route into the room as well as the room
- Check your lease if you live in a flat
Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Where we have fitted adjustable shelves, you can move them as needed, so the space keeps working.
It is useful to list what you want to store before we measure. A coat cupboard and a linen cupboard need quite different insides, and knowing this early saves changes later.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Most painted cupboard doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, as it stays stable and finishes evenly.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once everything is in place. It’s easy to touch up later.
Fitted cupboards in Stratford: local notes
In the area around Stratford, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 55%) and before 1919 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Stratford. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 19% of homes around Stratford were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So the walls behind fitted cupboards here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Theatre Royal, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Living in a block of flats near Stratford (London) station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to West Ham Park?
